Laurance Rockefeller Preserve Loop
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
Bear activity is common in this area, especially in late summer when berries ripen along the trail. Carry bear spray and make noise on blind corners through the forested sections.
The Phelps Lake overlook has a steep drop-off with no railing. Keep a close eye on children and stay well back from the edge.

Pro Tips
The preserve has a strict parking cap — only 50 cars allowed at a time — so arrive before 9 AM or after 4 PM to avoid getting turned away at the gate. There's no overflow lot and no waiting allowed.
Walk the loop counterclockwise to hit the Phelps Lake overlook first while your legs are fresh and the morning light is hitting the water. The descent to the lakeshore comes after, which feels more natural.
The wooden shelter at the trailhead has a small natural history exhibit and clean restrooms — use both before heading out, because there's nothing else on the trail.
