Open Canyon
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
Lingering snow on the upper canyon and divide can persist well into July. Steep snow slopes without traction devices are a serious slip-and-fall hazard — if you see consolidated snowfields across the trail, turn around unless you have microspikes and know how to self-arrest.
Afternoon thunderstorms are common from mid-July through August, and the exposed divide is the last place you want to be when lightning rolls in. Plan to be off the divide by early afternoon.
This is prime grizzly bear habitat. Carry bear spray, make noise in the forested sections, and know how to use your spray before you need it — not during.

Pro Tips
Get to the Death Canyon Trailhead by 6:30 AM — the small parking area fills fast in July and August, and there's no overflow lot. If it's full, you're adding road-walk distance to an already brutal day.
Carry at least three liters of water per person. There are stream crossings in the canyon, but flow varies by season and you'll want a filter. The exposed alpine section above treeline has zero water sources.
The final push to Mount Hunt Divide opens into stunning wildflower meadows in mid-July through early August. If you're carrying a camera, the light on the divide is best before noon when the Tetons aren't backlit.
