Upper Lehman Creek Campground
The Quick Take
Upper Lehman Creek sits at the sweet spot between accessibility and alpine immersion. Tucked along Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive at seventy-five hundred feet, this intimate campground trades amenities for atmosphere — there are no flush toilets, no showers, and your phone is basically a paperweight out here. What you get instead is the scent of ponderosa pine mixing with mountain mahogany, a creek running through camp, and a launching pad for some of the best high-country hiking in the Great Basin. With just over twenty sites, it fills up fast but never feels like a parking lot. The upper loop (sites twenty through twenty-four) is walk-in tent-only territory, which keeps things quieter and more secluded. If you want convenience and hookups, look at Lower Lehman Creek down the road. But if you came to Great Basin to actually feel like you are in the wilderness without a brutal approach, this is your campground.

Pro Tips
Sites on the upper loop (20-24) are tent-only and separated from vehicle traffic, making them the quietest spots in camp. Snag one of these if you are a light sleeper or just want that backcountry-adjacent vibe without hauling a pack.
You are three and a half miles up Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive here, which means the trailheads for Bristlecone Pine Grove, Wheeler Peak summit, and the glacier are all a short drive uphill. Hit the Wheeler Peak trail at dawn before afternoon thunderstorms roll in — the parking lot at the summit trailhead fills by mid-morning in July and August.
There is no potable water or camp store, so fill every container you own at Lehman Caves Visitor Center on your way up. Nights at this elevation drop into the forties even in midsummer, so pack layers and a sleeping bag rated to at least thirty-five degrees.
