Hike Montville Nature Trail or Mosca Pass Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
Mosca Pass Trail climbs into the mountains where afternoon thunderstorms roll in fast from June through August. Start early and plan to be below treeline by noon — lightning above the dunes has nowhere to go but through you.
The upper sections of Mosca Pass can hold deep snow well into May. Check with the visitor center before heading out in spring, and bring microspikes or snowshoes if snow is reported above the creek crossings.

Pro Tips
Start with Montville's short loop to stretch your legs, then continue onto Mosca Pass Trail from the same trailhead area — it turns a quick stroll into a proper half-day outing without any extra driving.
The trailhead sits at the end of the main park road near the Point of No Return parking area. Arrive before 10 AM on summer weekends or you may circle the lot for a while, since dune hikers compete for the same spots.
If you hike Mosca Pass in late September or early October, the aspen tunnel along the creek is peak gold and practically empty — most visitors are out on the dunes and never realize this trail exists.
