Elkmont Group Campground
The Quick Take
Elkmont Group Campground is the Smokies' answer to the question every scout leader and family reunion organizer eventually asks: where can we all camp together without losing our minds? With just a handful of dedicated group sites carved into the forest along the Little River, this is an intimate setup compared to the sprawling individual campground next door. You get the essentials -- potable water, a camp store for forgotten supplies, firewood for sale, and food lockers to keep bears out of your business -- but forget about flush toilets, showers, or plugging anything in. The amphitheater nearby is a nice bonus for groups that want a gathering spot beyond the fire ring. At roughly fifty bucks a night for an entire group site, the per-person math is hard to beat. Best for organized groups who want a base camp near some of the park's best trails without the circus atmosphere of Cades Cove.

Pro Tips
Reservations open six months in advance on Recreation.gov, and summer weekends for group sites vanish within days of opening. Set a calendar reminder for the exact date your target weekend goes live and book at 10 AM Eastern sharp -- hesitation costs you the spot.
The Elkmont Historic District trailhead is a short walk from camp, and the Little River Trail is one of the best low-key hikes in the park for groups with mixed fitness levels. For something more ambitious, the trail to Laurel Falls is a quick drive away and gives the group a waterfall payoff without a death march.
No showers means you need a plan. The Little River right next to camp is perfect for a cold rinse on a hot day, but bring biodegradable soap and use it well away from the water. Pack extra baby wipes for the group members who think roughing it means no hygiene at all.
