Look Rock Campground
The Quick Take
Look Rock is the Smokies campground that most people drive right past, and that's exactly why you should stop. Perched at 2,600 feet along the Foothills Parkway West, it trades the bumper-to-bumper chaos of Cades Cove and Elkmont for genuine breathing room and a ridgeline setting with legitimate mountain views. The trade-offs are real: no showers, no camp store, and cell service is effectively nonexistent. But the site count is modest, the price is among the lowest in the park, and the Look Rock observation tower -- a short walk from camp -- delivers one of the best panoramic views in the entire Smokies without earning a single blister. If you want the polished national park campground experience, book Elkmont. If you want to actually hear the forest at night and wake up above the clouds, this is your spot. Best suited for self-sufficient campers who treat silence as an amenity.

Pro Tips
The Look Rock observation tower trail starts practically at the campground entrance -- it's a quick, paved walk to a concrete tower with 360-degree views. Hit it at sunrise before the haze builds, especially in October when the fall color peaks across the western Smokies.
Chilhowee Lake is a ten-minute drive downhill and offers solid smallmouth bass fishing plus a swimming area that most Smokies visitors never discover. Pack a rod and a cooler; you can easily split a day between the lake and camp.
With no camp store or firewood sales on-site, stock up in Townsend or Maryville before you climb the Foothills Parkway. Bring more water than you think -- the spigots work, but hauling water uphill from them to certain sites gets old fast. A collapsible wagon pays for itself on the first trip.
