Hike Cove Hardwood Trail

What to Expect

This short loop off the Chimneys Picnic Area drops you into one of the most spectacular old-growth cove hardwood forests in the eastern United States. Within steps of the trailhead, tulip poplars and eastern hemlocks tower overhead like living columns, their canopy so thick it turns midday into permanent twilight. The trail winds uphill through a series of wooden staircases and root-laced switchbacks — nothing brutal, but enough to remind your calves they exist. Wildflowers carpet the forest floor in spring, and interpretive signs along the way decode the layers of natural and human history written into these woods. The payoff is purely atmospheric: standing in a cathedral of old trees that survived the logging era and grew back with a vengeance. Perfect for nature lovers, families with curious kids, and anyone who wants a quick forest immersion without committing to a full day on the trail.

Safety Advisory

The wooden staircase sections get genuinely treacherous when wet or covered in fallen leaves. Trekking poles are overkill here, but grippy-soled shoes are not optional.

Roots and rocks cross the trail frequently — watch your footing rather than the canopy, especially if you have young kids who tend to run ahead.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Park at the Chimneys Picnic Area and start the loop counterclockwise — the stair sections are easier to climb up than scramble down, especially when wet leaves make the wooden steps slick.

Trail Tip

Bring a macro lens or use your phone's close-up mode. The real show here is at ground level: fungi, salamanders, and spring ephemerals like trillium and bloodroot that most hikers walk right past.

Trail Tip

Pair this with the nearby Chimney Tops Trail for a half-day combo — the gentle cove walk makes an ideal warmup or cooldown around a more strenuous climb.
