What to Expect

This is the Smokies' best bang-for-your-buck waterfall hike — two cascades for less than a mile of walking each way. The wide gravel path follows Deep Creek through a canopy of hardwoods so thick the air feels ten degrees cooler than the parking lot. You'll hear Tom Branch Falls before you see it, a lacy curtain of water visible from a cluster of benches just a third of a mile in. Push on another half mile and the trail delivers Indian Creek Falls, a more muscular cascade that drops into a pool framed by moss-covered boulders. The creek stays within earshot the entire time, and the path is flat enough that you'll barely notice you're hiking. This is the trail you bring your parents to, the one you hit after a big breakfast in Bryson City, and the perfect warm-up before tackling something steeper in the park.

Safety Advisory

Creek-side rocks are slick year-round, especially near the footbridge at the Indian Creek junction. Watch your footing if you leave the main trail to get closer to either waterfall.

Deep Creek is a popular tubing area in summer — expect foot traffic and noise from the tubing put-in near the trailhead, which thins out quickly once you pass Tom Branch Falls.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Park early at the Deep Creek trailhead near Bryson City — the lot fills by mid-morning on summer weekends and fall color weekends. You'll need a parking tag, available online through the park's reservation system.

Trail Tip

Bring creek shoes or sandals with grip. The benches near Indian Creek Falls sit right at the water's edge, and wading in the creek on a hot day is half the reason people come here.

Trail Tip

For the best photos of Tom Branch Falls, shoot from the lower bench on the left side of the trail — you'll get the full cascade framed by rhododendron without other hikers in the frame.
