What to Expect

This is the Smokies' greatest hits reel crammed into a single afternoon stroll. Starting from the Deep Creek trailhead near Bryson City, you'll climb a short, steep punch up to Juney Whank Falls first — a two-tiered cascade you cross on a footbridge that puts you close enough to feel the mist. From there the loop mellows out along Deep Creek Trail, a wide, shaded former road bed that follows the creek through dense hardwood forest. Indian Creek Falls hits you next, a broad curtain of water tumbling over a rock ledge, followed by Tom Branch Falls visible right from the main trail. The whole loop threads through rhododendron tunnels and towering tulip poplars, with the soundtrack of rushing water almost the entire way. Three waterfalls for the effort most trails ask for one — families with kids, casual hikers, and anyone short on time will love this one.

Safety Advisory

The rocks near all three waterfalls stay perpetually slick from spray — stick to the established viewpoints and resist the urge to climb the rock faces for a better angle.

Deep Creek can rise quickly after heavy rain, making some trail sections muddy and the creek crossings trickier than usual. Check recent weather before heading out.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hike the loop counterclockwise — hit Juney Whank Falls first while your legs are fresh for the steepest section, then cruise the gentle creekside path back past Indian Creek and Tom Branch Falls.

Trail Tip

Arrive before 9 AM on summer weekends. The Deep Creek parking lot fills fast because tubers share it with hikers, and once it's full, you're out of luck — there's no overflow lot nearby.

Trail Tip

The footbridge over Juney Whank Falls is one of the best photo spots in the entire park. Shoot from the bridge looking down for the full two-tier drop, or scramble to the base for a wide-angle view with the bridge framing the upper cascade.
