What to Expect

This loop starts easy and stays pleasant — the kind of hike where you forget you're exercising. You'll begin on the old Elkmont road along Little River, a wide, flat stretch where the water runs clear over smooth stones and the canopy keeps things cool even in July. After peeling off onto Cucumber Gap Trail, the path narrows and climbs gently through a hardwood forest that absolutely erupts with wildflowers in April and May — trillium, phacelia, violets carpeting the forest floor. The Jakes Creek descent brings you past remnants of the old Elkmont summer colony, stone chimneys and foundations slowly being swallowed by moss. Stream crossings are minor — rock-hop territory, nothing dramatic. This is a perfect loop for hikers who want variety without punishment, and anyone chasing peak wildflower season in the Smokies will find this trail hard to beat.

Safety Advisory

The Cucumber Gap section has a few minor stream crossings that can get slippery after rain — trekking poles help, and waterproof boots earn their keep here.

You'll need a parking tag to leave your car at Elkmont for more than 15 minutes — buy one online in advance to avoid the scramble at the trailhead.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hike the loop counterclockwise — start on Little River Trail so you warm up on the flat section before the modest climb up Cucumber Gap, then coast downhill on Jakes Creek back to your car.

Trail Tip

Park at the Elkmont Campground day-use area and start early on spring weekends — Elkmont is one of the most popular trailheads in the park, and the lot fills by mid-morning from April through October.

Trail Tip

The stretch between Cucumber Gap and Jakes Creek passes through some of the densest wildflower displays in the entire park. Mid-April is peak bloom most years — bring a macro lens and budget an extra hour for the flower show.
