Hike to Look Rock Tower
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The observation tower is fully exposed with metal railings — in thunderstorms it becomes a lightning risk. Check the forecast and head down immediately if you hear thunder.
The paved surface can be slick when wet or covered in fallen leaves in autumn, especially on the inclined sections. Watch your footing if conditions are damp.

Pro Tips
Time your visit for late afternoon on a weekday — the tower faces west, and the sunset light across the layered ridges is spectacular, but weekend crowds can pack the small parking area by mid-morning.
The trailhead sits off Foothills Parkway West, not the main park road, so most GPS apps route you through Chilhowee — double-check your directions if you're coming from Townsend or Cades Cove to avoid a 30-minute detour.
Bring binoculars to the tower. On clear mornings you can pick out Clingmans Dome and the AT ridge to the southeast, and in fall the hawk migration passes right through this corridor.
