The Quick Take

Marcus is the campground for people who think Pine Springs and Dog Canyon are too crowded -- which tells you something, because those places are already quiet by national park standards. Tucked into a pinon-juniper grove at the end of a 3.7-mile hike from Dog Canyon, this five-site wilderness camp offers genuine solitude and natural wind protection that the exposed ridgeline camps in the Guadalupes cannot match. The trade-off is real: no water, no toilets beyond what you pack in, and a trail that demands attention since the cairn markings can be easy to lose in the tall grass crossing Manzanita Ridge. But at six dollars a night with shade, silence, and some of the darkest skies in Texas, Marcus rewards the effort. Choose this one if you want a backcountry overnight without a punishing elevation grind.

Booking tip: Marcus is rarely full, but you still need to reserve a Wilderness Use Permit through Recreation.gov before your trip -- walk-up permits are limited, especially on spring and fall weekends when the Guadalupes see their modest peak traffic.

Pro Tips

Camping Tip

Pick up your Wilderness Use Permit at the Dog Canyon Ranger Station before heading out -- they close early and you cannot camp without one. Have your commercial toilet bag system visible and ready; rangers check for proof of possession at permit pickup.

Camping Tip

The stretch across Manzanita Ridge can be disorienting when the grass is high in late summer. Hike this section during daylight on your first visit and keep your eyes on the rock cairns rather than relying on a worn trail. A GPS track downloaded ahead of time is cheap insurance.

Camping Tip

No campfires allowed anywhere in the Guadalupes, full stop. Bring a reliable canister stove and enough fuel for hot meals both nights if you plan to stay two. Pack at least a gallon of water per person per day -- there is zero water at Marcus, and the Dog Canyon area is drier than you expect.
