What to Expect

Bush Mountain Trail takes you deep into the heart of the Guadalupe backcountry, trading the crowds at Guadalupe Peak for genuine West Texas solitude. The trail climbs steadily through pinyon-juniper woodland before opening into the high-country meadows and relict forests that make this range so unusual — a sky island ecosystem stranded from the last ice age. The nearly 1,700 feet of elevation gain is spread across four and a half miles, so it never feels punishing, but it's persistent enough to remind you that you're earning every view. At the summit ridge, you're rewarded with sweeping panoramas across the Chihuahuan Desert floor, with the salt flats shimmering to the west. This is a trail for hikers who want the real Guadalupes — no guardrails, no crowds, just high desert wilderness that feels genuinely remote.

Safety Advisory

Exposed ridgelines are lightning magnets during summer monsoon season (July through September). If thunderheads start building, descend immediately — there's no shelter above the tree line.

Rattlesnakes are active in warmer months, particularly along rocky sections of the trail. Watch where you place your hands and feet, especially when stepping over logs or rocks.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start from the Pine Springs Trailhead early — the trail shares its first stretch with the more popular Guadalupe Peak route, and parking fills fast on weekends and holidays.

Trail Tip

There is zero reliable water on this trail. Carry at least three liters per person, more in warm months. The dry desert air will dehydrate you faster than you expect.

Trail Tip

If you're planning to use the backcountry campsites, grab a free permit at the Pine Springs Visitor Center before you head out — they close at 4:30 PM, so don't roll in late expecting to sort it trailside.
