Smith Spring Trail Loop

What to Expect

This loop starts at the historic Frijole Ranch and eases you in with a paved stretch to Manzanita Spring — wheelchair-friendly and flat enough that you might wonder what all the fuss is about. Then the trail climbs gently into the foothills, trading open desert for a surprisingly lush pocket canyon where Smith Spring hides against the mountain wall. The contrast is almost jarring: one minute you're walking through sun-scorched Chihuahuan Desert scrub, the next you're standing in dappled shade listening to a small waterfall trickle over mossy rocks. Keep your eyes on the trees — this is one of the best birding spots in the park, and mule deer browse the understory like they own the place. You'll also spot burn scars from the early '90s fires, now slowly healing. This trail is perfect for families, birders, and anyone who wants a taste of the Guadalupe Mountains without committing to an all-day suffer-fest.

Safety Advisory

The paved section to Manzanita Spring is exposed with zero shade — on summer afternoons, surface temperatures can make this stretch miserable. Start early or wait for late afternoon.

Rattlesnakes are active spring through fall, especially on the rocky unpaved section near Smith Spring. Watch where you step and where you sit.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hike the loop counterclockwise — hit Manzanita Spring first on the paved section, then climb to Smith Spring while your legs are fresh and finish with the downhill return to Frijole Ranch.

Trail Tip

Bring binoculars, not just a water bottle. The dense vegetation around Smith Spring attracts painted buntings, Scott's orioles, and canyon wrens that you won't spot anywhere else in the park this easily.

Trail Tip

Linger at Smith Spring itself — there's a natural rock bench near the waterfall that most people walk right past. It's the coolest spot in the park on a hot day, and the light filtering through the canopy makes for moody photographs around mid-morning.
