Kīpahulu Campground
The Quick Take
Kipahulu Campground is the kind of place that rewards you for making the long, winding drive to Haleakala's coastal district. With only nine sites perched above ocean cliffs and a short walk from the famous pools at Ohe'o Gulch, this is about as far from a typical national park campground as you can get. The trade-offs are real: no running water on site, pit toilets only, and the nearest town of Hana is a solid ten miles back on a road that doesn't do straight lines. But at eight dollars a night, you're essentially paying pocket change to fall asleep to the sound of waves crashing against volcanic rock. This is not the campground for people who want convenience. It's for travelers who drove the Road to Hana and want to actually experience the wild, lush side of Maui that most tourists only see from a car window. Choose Kipahulu if you value atmosphere over amenities and don't mind hauling your own water.

Pro Tips
Fill every water container you own at the Kipahulu Visitor Center restrooms before setting up camp -- there is no water at the campground itself, and you will use more than you think in the tropical humidity.
The pools at Ohe'o Gulch are a short walk from camp, but check conditions at the visitor center first. Flash flooding closes them regularly, and the park does not mess around with enforcement. Plan your swim for morning when crowds from day-trippers haven't arrived yet.
Stock up on food and supplies in Paia or Kahului before you start the Road to Hana. The two general stores in Hana are expensive and limited. Bring a camp stove and extra fuel since you have BBQ grills available but finding charcoal out here is hit or miss.
