What to Expect

This trail drops you into one of the most primordial landscapes in Hawaii — a dripping, green-on-green rainforest corridor that feels less like a hike and more like time travel. Starting from the Kipahulu district (the coastal side of Haleakala that most visitors skip entirely), you'll follow a muddy, root-laced path through dense bamboo groves and towering banyan trees, with the sound of rushing water as your constant companion. The elevation gain is gentle enough that your legs won't complain, but the terrain keeps you honest — expect slick rocks and stream crossings that demand attention. The payoff is a series of cascading pools and waterfalls tucked into volcanic rock, the kind of scene that makes you understand why ancient Hawaiians considered this valley sacred. This trail rewards anyone who loves lush, immersive environments over panoramic summit views.

Safety Advisory

Flash floods are a real and serious danger here — the streams and pools can rise without warning after rain upstream. If the water turns brown or you hear a low rumble, get to high ground immediately and do not attempt crossings.

Leptospirosis is present in Hawaiian freshwater streams. Avoid submerging open cuts or wounds, and do not drink untreated water from the pools no matter how pristine they look.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

The Kipahulu district is a solid two-hour drive from the summit entrance via the winding Road to Hana — do not try to combine a sunrise summit visit with this trail in the same day unless you enjoy white-knuckle driving in the dark.

Trail Tip

Wear shoes with aggressive tread or trail runners with grip — the roots and rocks stay perpetually slick from rain, and basic sneakers will betray you on the first stream crossing.

Trail Tip

Hit the trail before 10 AM to beat the Road to Hana tour vans that start flooding the Kipahulu parking area by midday. Early morning also gives you the best light filtering through the canopy for photography.
