Short Hike to Makahiku Falls
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
Stay behind the railing at the Makahiku Falls overlook. The cliff edge is undercut and the volcanic rock is slippery when wet — which is most of the time in Kipahulu. Falls from this viewpoint would be fatal.
Flash floods happen fast in this valley, especially after upslope rain you may not even see from the trailhead. If the stream is running brown or rising visibly, turn around immediately.

Pro Tips
The Kipahulu District is a solid two-hour drive from Kahului via the Hana Highway — plan to arrive by mid-morning before the tour vans stack up at the small parking lot. There's no shortcut.
Bring bug spray with actual DEET. The jungle canopy traps moisture and mosquitoes thrive here year-round, especially near the waterfall overlook where you'll want to linger.
After you see Makahiku Falls, walk just past the overlook to where a short spur trail leads to the base of the stream above the falls. It's a quieter spot most visitors skip, and the light filtering through the banyan trees is unreal for photos.
