What to Expect

This is less of a hike and more of a sensory ambush. A short, flat boardwalk trail leads you past steam vents and fumaroles where the earth is actively exhaling sulfur-laced gases, painting the surrounding rocks in surreal yellows, oranges, and whites. The wooden walkway keeps you on a safe path while volcanic heat radiates from cracks just feet away — you can literally feel the warmth through your shoes in places. The air carries that unmistakable rotten-egg smell of hydrogen sulfide, which ranges from mildly unpleasant to eye-watering depending on wind direction. Crystalline sulfur deposits crust the rocks like alien frost, and the vegetation at the edges tells the story of what thrives (and what doesn't) in acidic soil. This trail is perfect for anyone who wants a visceral, zero-effort reminder that they're standing on one of the most active volcanoes on the planet.

Safety Advisory

Volcanic gases including hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide are present in concentrated levels near the vents. People with asthma, heart conditions, or respiratory issues should avoid this trail entirely — these gases can trigger serious reactions.

Stay on the boardwalk at all times. The ground near thermal features can be unstable and thin crusts may conceal scalding steam or acidic pools just inches below the surface.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hit this trail in the early morning when cooler air makes the steam vents dramatically more visible — by midday the contrast fades and you lose half the visual spectacle.

Trail Tip

Bring a bandana or buff to cover your nose and mouth if you're sensitive to sulfur gases. The smell is manageable for most people, but asthmatics and anyone with respiratory issues will want that layer.

Trail Tip

Combine this with the nearby Steam Vents area and the Crater Rim Trail section for a satisfying loop that gives you the full volcanic greatest-hits experience without adding serious mileage.
