Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube)
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The lava tube floor can be slick from constant moisture — wear shoes with actual grip, not flip-flops, no matter how short the walk is.
Watch your head in the tube. The ceiling height varies and there are a few low spots that will remind tall hikers to stay alert.

Pro Tips
Arrive before 9 AM or after 3 PM to dodge the tour bus crowds — midday turns the parking lot into a zoo and you'll be shuffling through the tube shoulder-to-shoulder.
Bring a headlamp or decent flashlight. The lit section of the tube is fine, but there's an extended unlit section beyond the main exit that most visitors skip — it's rougher, darker, and far more atmospheric if you're up for it.
Pair this with the nearby Kilauea Iki Trail for a full morning — you'll get the lava tube novelty plus a legitimate hike across a crater floor, and the trailheads are practically next to each other.
