Nahuku (Thurston Lava Tube)
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The lava tube floor is uneven and can be slippery from moisture dripping through the ceiling — wear closed-toe shoes with decent grip, not flip-flops.
Watch your head at the tube entrance and exit where the ceiling dips lower than you expect, especially if you are tall.
Trail Details
- 1
Arrive before 9 AM or after 3 PM to avoid the tour bus crush — midday can feel like a theme park queue, and the parking lot fills fast.
- 2
Bring a small flashlight or use your phone light for the extended tube section beyond the lit portion — most visitors turn around at the end of the lit area and miss the quieter, more atmospheric unlit stretch.
- 3
After exiting the tube, take the short loop trail back through the rainforest rather than retracing your steps — it adds maybe five minutes and gives you a better look at the native bird life in the ohia canopy.
