Access this as a spur off Sunset Trail rather than trying to find a dedicated trailhead — start from the Sunset Trail parking area on Fountain Street and watch for the signed junction about halfway along.
The novaculite outcrop at the end catches golden light beautifully in the late afternoon, making the last hour before sunset the sweet spot for photos — and it lines up perfectly with the trail's namesake.
Pair this with the full Sunset Trail loop for a roughly two-mile outing that hits three overlooks; Balanced Rock is the showstopper, so save it for last rather than doubling back.
