What to Expect

Canyon Trail is the kind of short connector that punches well above its weight class. Starting behind the Mountain Valley Water building in downtown Hot Springs, you'll climb from the valley floor into the forested slopes of West Mountain — gaining roughly 300 feet of elevation in under a mile. The first stretch lulls you into comfort with a moderate grade through mixed hardwoods, but once you pass West Mountain Drive, the trail rears up with a leg-searing pitch that will have you questioning your life choices. The reward is access to the West Mountain trail network and increasingly open views of the Ouachita Mountains rolling out below you. The forest canopy provides decent shade most of the year, and the trail surface is a mix of packed earth and exposed rock. This one's perfect for hikers staying in town who want a quick workout without driving anywhere — you can literally walk here from your hotel.

Safety Advisory

The section between West Mountain Drive and West Mountain Trail is genuinely steep with loose rock in places — wear shoes with real tread, not sandals or fashion sneakers.

After rain, the packed-earth sections become slick enough to send you sliding. Trekking poles are worth carrying if you're heading up in wet conditions.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start from downtown and use this as a one-way connector to West Mountain Trail for a longer loop — coming back down the same steep section is harder on the knees than going up it.

Trail Tip

The trailhead behind the Mountain Valley Water building is easy to miss if you're not looking for it. Use the building as your landmark rather than relying on signage from the street.

Trail Tip

Tackle this one in the morning before the midday heat, especially in summer — the steep upper section is south-facing and gets direct sun through gaps in the canopy.
