What to Expect

Goat Rock is one of those trails that punches well above its weight. Starting from the North Mountain overlook parking area, you'll drop into a forested path that winds through mixed hardwoods before climbing to exposed rock outcrops with sweeping views of the Ouachita Mountains. The trail is short enough to knock out in about an hour, but the payoff — a panoramic vista overlooking the recharge zone where rainwater begins its 4,000-year journey to become Hot Springs' famous thermal waters — makes it feel like a much bigger adventure. The path is generally well-maintained with a gentle grade, though you'll navigate some rocky sections near the summit. This is the trail for anyone who wants legitimate mountain views without committing to a full day of hiking, and it's one of the best spots in the park to actually understand the geology that makes Hot Springs unique.

Safety Advisory

The rock outcrops at the overlook points have no guardrails — watch children and dogs carefully near the edges, especially when rocks are wet or icy.

Sections of exposed rock can be slick after rain. Footwear with decent tread makes a real difference on the final approach to the viewpoint.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

The North Mountain overlook lot fills fast on weekends — arrive before 9 AM or come on a weekday. If the lot is full, you can park at the Gulpha Gorge area and connect via the trail system, but that adds significant distance.

Trail Tip

The trail faces south and west, so afternoon sun can be relentless in summer. Morning hikes stay cooler and give you better light on the mountain ridges for photos.

Trail Tip

Bring binoculars — from the Goat Rock overlook you can trace the thermal spring recharge area below, and on clear days the layered ridgelines of the Ouachitas stack up beautifully to the west. The interpretive signage at the top helps you make sense of what you're seeing.
