What to Expect

Mountain Top Trail packs a surprising punch for a park better known for its bathhouses than its backcountry. Heading southbound from Whittington Park, the trail wastes no time — you're grinding uphill through dense hardwood forest almost immediately, gaining over four hundred feet of elevation in a mile and a half. The canopy keeps things shaded and the footing is generally good, though exposed roots and loose gravel demand attention on the steeper pitches. Link it with Canyon Trail and West Mountain Trail for a proper loop around West Mountain, which transforms a short out-and-back into one of the best half-day circuits in Arkansas. Views from the upper ridge open up through the trees, offering glimpses across the Ouachita Mountains that most Hot Springs visitors never see. This trail rewards hikers who want a real workout disguised as a city park stroll.

Safety Advisory

The southbound descent from the ridge drops steeply on packed dirt that becomes slick after rain — trekking poles earn their weight here, and ankle-supporting footwear is strongly recommended.

Summer heat and humidity in central Arkansas are no joke — the canopy helps, but the sustained climb can be deceptively taxing when temperatures push into the nineties.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hike the loop counterclockwise (northbound on Mountain Top) for a more gradual ascent and save the steep descent for Canyon Trail, where your knees will thank you for the shorter drop.

Trail Tip

Start from Whittington Park where free parking is plentiful — the trailhead off Fountain Street fills up fast on weekends and has limited spots.

Trail Tip

Time your hike for late afternoon when the western-facing sections catch golden light filtering through the hardwoods, especially where Mountain Top crosses Sunset Trail — the intersection is aptly named.
