What to Expect

This trail earns every inch of its former name — Dead Chief — with a climb that starts civilized and turns genuinely steep. You begin behind the grand Fordyce Bathhouse, ascending a theatrical stone staircase that feels more European promenade than national park trailhead. Once past the iron gate, the manicured veneer drops away and you're on a gravel-and-dirt path cutting through dense hardwood forest on the slopes of Hot Springs Mountain. The grade ramps up quickly in spots, the kind of pitches where you plant your hands on your knees and question your breakfast choices. But the canopy is generous with shade, and the forest feels surprisingly wild for being minutes from downtown. At roughly 1.4 miles one way, it connects to the ridge network above the thermal springs. This trail rewards hikers who like earning their views the hard way and don't mind a short but punchy workout sandwiched between history and forest.

Safety Advisory

The steep sections on loose gravel can be treacherous when wet — after rain, footing gets unpredictable and a slip on these grades means a rough slide.

Despite the wheelchair-accessible designation at the trailhead area, the trail itself climbs steeply on uneven terrain — the accessible portion ends well before the real hiking begins.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start at the Fordyce Visitor Center and use the Stephen's Balustrade staircase as your warm-up — it primes your legs for the steeper pitches ahead and beats a cold start on the grade.

Trail Tip

Bring trekking poles for the descent. The steep sections get slippery on loose gravel, especially after rain, and your knees will thank you on the way back down.

Trail Tip

Connect Oertel to the Hot Springs Mountain Trail at the top for a loop that hits the observation tower — the panoramic view of the Ouachita Mountains makes the extra mileage worth it.
