What to Expect

Peak Trail is the kind of hike that tricks you — it starts as a civilized paved path off the Grand Promenade, lulling you into thinking this is a casual stroll, then shifts to gravel and ramps up with a surprisingly steep grade that will remind your calves they exist. The climb is short but honest, pushing through hardwood forest canopy before depositing you at the Hot Springs Mountain Tower at the summit. The payoff is a panoramic view of the Ouachita Mountains and the town of Hot Springs nestled in the valley below — genuinely stunning for such a quick effort. This trail also serves as the gateway to a whole network of paths around the mountain, so it rewards the curious. Perfect for families who want a real sense of accomplishment without committing to a full day, or anyone looking for a quick leg-stretcher with an actual destination worth reaching.

Safety Advisory

The gravel section can be slippery when wet, especially on the steeper stretches. After rain, watch your footing on the descent — the grade is steep enough to send you sliding in smooth-soled shoes.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Use this trail as a launchpad — connect to the Sunset Trail or West Mountain Trail from the top to turn a 40-minute out-and-back into a proper loop without retracing your steps.

Trail Tip

The Mountain Tower elevator has a small fee, but the observation deck views are worth it on clear days. If you want the views for free, the overlooks near the tower summit deliver almost as well.

Trail Tip

Start from the Grand Promenade near the Fordyce Bathhouse and time your hike for late afternoon — the western-facing overlooks catch golden light beautifully, and the crowds thin out after the tour bus crowd heads back to town.
