What to Expect

Don't let the name fool you — Short Cut Trail earns its brevity with a surprisingly steep grade that climbs through the forested slopes of Hot Springs Mountain. This connector trail links the Oertel Trail to the Hot Springs Mountain Trail near the summit picnic area, packing a solid uphill punch into a quick jaunt. The path cuts through a canopy of hardwoods that keeps things shaded even on sweltering Arkansas afternoons, with the trail surface ranging from packed dirt to occasional rocky steps. At roughly a twenty-percent grade, your calves will know they've been somewhere despite the short distance. The reward up top is the picnic area near Hot Springs Mountain Tower, where you can catch your breath and take in views of the Ouachita Mountains. Perfect for hikers looking to piece together a loop using the park's interconnected trail network rather than retracing their steps.

Safety Advisory

The steep grade can be slippery after rain — the packed dirt becomes slick clay in wet conditions, so watch your footing or save it for a dry day

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Use this trail as the uphill leg of a loop combining Oertel Trail and Hot Springs Mountain Trail — descending the steep grade is easier on the lungs, though harder on the knees

Trail Tip

Park at the Gulpha Gorge area and work your way up through the trail system rather than driving to the summit — you'll earn the picnic area views and avoid the cramped upper parking lot

Trail Tip

The picnic area at the top has tables and shade, so toss a sandwich in your pack and make the summit lunch your turnaround reward
