What to Expect

This loop packs a surprising amount of variety into a mellow three-and-a-half-mile ramble. You'll start in a hardwood forest thick with maple and beech — the kind of canopy that turns the trail into a cathedral of green in summer and a riot of color come October. The path winds past the Bailly Homestead, a fur trader's compound dating to the 1820s, and the Chellberg Farm, a preserved Swedish homestead where you can almost smell the wood smoke. From there, you'll trace the Little Calumet River through bottomland forest before the trees open up into Mnoké Prairie, a recently restored grassland that feels like stepping into a completely different landscape. The trail surface is mostly packed dirt and mowed grass — nothing technical, but expect muddy stretches after rain. History buffs and nature walkers who want a trail that tells a story will be in their element here.

Safety Advisory

The riverside and prairie sections can be prime tick habitat from spring through fall — wear long pants, use repellent, and do a thorough check when you get back to the car.

Sections near the Little Calumet River flood after heavy rains, turning the trail into ankle-deep mud or worse — check recent conditions if there's been significant rainfall in the past few days.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start at the Bailly/Chellberg parking lot off Mineral Springs Road — it's the best-maintained access point and puts the homestead sites at the beginning of your walk when you're fresh and curious.

Trail Tip

The Mnoké Prairie section is exposed with no shade, so on hot days tackle that stretch first thing in the morning or save it for late afternoon when the light is better for photos anyway.

Trail Tip

Check the Indiana Dunes events calendar before you go — the National Park Service runs living history demonstrations at Chellberg Farm on select weekends, including maple sugar time in late February and March, which transforms this from a nice walk into a genuinely memorable outing.
