What to Expect
This short paved loop packs a geological punchline into half a mile: the low ridge you're walking along was Lake Michigan's actual shoreline during the last ice age, when glaciers had just retreated and the lake sat a full story higher than it does today. The trail moves through open dune habitat with scattered cottonwoods and prairie grasses, and interpretive signs along the way are genuinely worth reading — they make the ancient lakebed story click in a way that transforms an otherwise modest walk into something memorable. The surface is paved throughout, so footing is never an issue, but the trail is not a flat stroll; the ridge has enough roll to it to feel like you're traversing something real. This one is made for curious first-timers, families with small kids, and anyone who wants a quick dose of 'I did not know that' without committing to a full afternoon.

Trailhead Calumet Dunes Trail
- 1
Indiana Dunes draws enormous crowds from Chicago on summer weekends — arrive before 9am or visit on a weekday to have the trail and parking area to yourself.
- 2
The interpretive panels explain the glacial lake levels that created the Calumet ridge; take two minutes to read them rather than walking past, because the story is the whole point of this trail.
- 3
The ridge itself offers an elevated sightline back across the lower plain — position yourself on the highest point of the loop and look south to see just how flat the old lake bed is, which makes the elevation contrast land visually.
