What to Expect

Glenwood Dunes is the trail system that locals don't advertise. Nearly seven miles of interconnected loops wind through mature oak and hickory forest, with enough route options to keep you exploring for multiple visits. The terrain rolls gently over ancient dune ridges — nothing that'll destroy your knees, but enough undulation to keep things interesting. In spring and early summer, the forest floor erupts with wildflowers before the canopy closes in. The trails are wide and well-maintained, shared with equestrians, so expect some churned-up sections after wet weather. Unlike the lakefront trails that draw the crowds, Glenwood Dunes feels like a proper Midwestern woodland hike — quiet, shaded, and surprisingly wild for a park sandwiched between steel mills and suburbs. Runners and hikers who want distance without the tourist circus will find their happy place here.

Safety Advisory

Watch for standing water and muddy sections after rain, especially on trails shared with horses — the churned-up ground can turn ankle-twisting slick.

Ticks are aggressive here from April through October. Do a thorough check after every visit — the oak-leaf litter is prime tick habitat.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Park at the Brummund Road trailhead for the most direct access and fewest other cars — the County Line Road lot fills up faster on weekends.

Trail Tip

The trail map looks like a plate of spaghetti, so photograph the trailhead map board before you start. Cell service is spotty under the canopy, and the loop intersections aren't always obvious.

Trail Tip

Hit the outer perimeter loop counterclockwise in fall — the low afternoon sun cuts through the hardwoods at golden hour and lights up the trail like a cathedral.
