What to Expect

This is one of those trails where the walking is almost beside the point — you're here for what's happening off the path. The paved route rolls flat through the edge of the Great Marsh, a sprawling wetland complex that stretches across the heart of Indiana Dunes like a hidden inland sea. The surface is smooth and level, making this less of a hike and more of a guided stroll through one of the Midwest's most productive birding corridors. You'll reach an observation deck overlooking the marsh, where the real show begins: herons stalking through the shallows, red-winged blackbirds claiming territory from every cattail, and — if your timing is right — migrating warblers passing through by the dozens. Birders, photographers, and anyone who finds peace in wetland stillness will feel right at home here.

Safety Advisory

Mosquitoes can be brutal from late May through September — this is a wetland, and they own the place. Long sleeves and insect repellent are non-negotiable during warm months.

The boardwalk and observation deck can be slippery when wet or frosty — watch your footing in early morning or after rain.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Bring binoculars, not hiking boots — the trail is paved and flat, but the birds can be 50-100 yards out in the marsh, and naked-eye viewing will leave you squinting at silhouettes.

Trail Tip

Hit the observation deck at dawn during spring migration (late April through mid-May) when the marsh is a layover for dozens of warbler species funneling along the Lake Michigan shoreline.

Trail Tip

The parking area off Broadway Avenue fills up on weekend mornings in spring and fall — arrive before 8 AM or come on a weekday to have the deck to yourself.
