Great Marsh Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
Mosquitoes can be brutal from late May through September — this is a wetland, and they own the place. Long sleeves and insect repellent are non-negotiable during warm months.
The boardwalk and observation deck can be slippery when wet or frosty — watch your footing in early morning or after rain.

Pro Tips
Bring binoculars, not hiking boots — the trail is paved and flat, but the birds can be 50-100 yards out in the marsh, and naked-eye viewing will leave you squinting at silhouettes.
Hit the observation deck at dawn during spring migration (late April through mid-May) when the marsh is a layover for dozens of warbler species funneling along the Lake Michigan shoreline.
The parking area off Broadway Avenue fills up on weekend mornings in spring and fall — arrive before 8 AM or come on a weekday to have the deck to yourself.
