What to Expect

This short loop drops you into one of the Midwest's most surprising pockets of biodiversity — a remnant prairie that somehow survived the plow and the suburb. The trail threads through tallgrass prairie where big bluestem towers overhead in late summer, then dips into wetland margins buzzing with dragonflies before curving through scattered oak savanna. The path is flat and mostly mowed grass, though sections can get soggy after rain. At under a mile roundtrip, this is less a hike and more a slow wander — the kind where you stop every thirty feet to look at something. Birders and botany nerds will lose their minds here; over 350 plant species have been documented in this preserve. If you want a trail that makes you rethink what Indiana looks like, this is it.

Safety Advisory

Ticks are aggressive in the tall grass from spring through fall — wear long pants, tuck them into your socks, and do a thorough check after. This is prime tick habitat.

There is zero shade on the prairie sections. On hot summer days the exposed grassland can feel punishing, so carry water even for this short distance and consider early morning visits.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Visit in late July through September when the prairie is at peak bloom — the wildflower display rivals anything you'd find in the Great Plains, and the grasses reach their full dramatic height.

Trail Tip

Bring binoculars rather than trekking poles. This trail is flat enough for sandals, but the birding is exceptional — bobolinks, meadowlarks, and sedge wrens all nest here in season.

Trail Tip

The trailhead is on Kennedy Avenue south of Main Street in Griffith, separated from the main Indiana Dunes units. GPS the Hoosier Prairie State Nature Preserve specifically, or you'll end up at the wrong trailhead entirely.
