Mount Baldy Beach Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
Mount Baldy has active 'sand holes' — sudden depressions that can open in the dune surface and trap people. Stay on the marked trail and never dig into the sand.
The climb back up through loose sand is significantly harder than the descent. Budget twice as much time and energy for the return trip, and bring water even though the trail is short.
No lifeguards patrol this beach. Lake Michigan currents and undertow can be dangerously strong, especially after storms — swimming here is at your own risk.

Pro Tips
Ditch the hiking boots — barefoot or sand-friendly shoes work far better on the loose dune face, and you'll want to feel the sand anyway once you hit the beach.
Visit on a weekday morning to snag parking in the small lot off Rice Street; weekend afternoons fill up fast and there's no overflow option nearby.
Walk east along the beach once you reach the bottom for the best unobstructed views of the Chicago skyline across the lake — clear days reveal the full downtown silhouette.
