What to Expect

Don't let the modest distance fool you — Mount Jackson earns its 'strenuous' rating through pure sand. From the trailhead, you're immediately climbing loose dune sand, the kind that swallows your feet and turns a short walk into a full-leg workout. The trail winds up through patches of marram grass and scattered oak before delivering you to the highest point in Indiana Dunes, where Lake Michigan stretches out like an inland sea below. On clear days, you can pick out the Chicago skyline across the water — a surreal contrast to the wild dune landscape under your boots. The descent is half the effort but twice the fun, with sandy slopes begging to be jogged down. This one rewards anyone who wants a real workout packed into a lunch-break timeframe, and photographers chasing that Lake Michigan panorama.

Safety Advisory

The steep, loose sand makes footing unpredictable — ankle rolls are common, especially on the descent when tired legs meet shifting terrain. Take the downhill slowly and avoid running unless you're comfortable with sand running.

There is zero shade on the upper dune sections. In summer, heat exhaustion is a real risk on what looks like a casual short hike. Carry more water than you think you need for two and a half miles.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hit this trail in the early morning before the sand heats up — by midday in summer, the exposed dune surface can reach scalding temperatures that radiate right through thin-soled shoes.

Trail Tip

Skip the hiking boots and go with trail runners or even sturdy sandals with heel straps. Traditional boots just fill with sand on every step, and the ankle support they offer is wasted on dune terrain.

Trail Tip

Once you summit, walk the ridgeline east for about two minutes to find an unobstructed view toward Michigan City — this angle gives you the best shot of the lake with the dune grasses in the foreground, far better than the obvious overlook where everyone stops.
