Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk Trail

What to Expect

This is one of the easiest walks in the entire national park system — a paved loop that hugs the Lake Michigan shoreline and follows the old Portage Lakefront canal. You'll start near the breakwater and immediately get hit with wide-open lake views that feel more like an ocean than a Midwestern waterway. The path curves along the riverwalk section where steel mill history meets surprisingly wild shoreline. Depending on the season, you might spot migrating hawks kettling overhead or shorebirds working the beach. The real draw is the breakwater pier extending into the lake, where waves crash dramatically during storms and sunsets paint the Chicago skyline in the distance. This trail is perfect for anyone who wants a national park experience without breaking a sweat — stroller-pushers, birders with spotting scopes, and sunset chasers who'd rather sip coffee than climb mountains.

Safety Advisory

The breakwater pier gets slippery when wet and waves can surge over it during storms — stay well back from the edge in rough weather, and keep kids off the rocks entirely when whitecaps are rolling in.

Lake Michigan has dangerous rip currents even close to shore. Swimming is tempting on hot days but check posted conditions first — this lake claims several lives every year.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Head straight for the breakwater pier at sunset — on clear evenings you can see the Chicago skyline silhouetted against the sky, roughly 30 miles west across the water.

Trail Tip

Spring and fall migration windows (April-May and September-October) turn this short walk into a world-class birding spot. Bring binoculars and check eBird hotspot reports for Indiana Dunes Portage Lakefront before you go.

Trail Tip

The Portage Lakefront Pavilion near the trailhead has restrooms and interpretive displays — hit those first, then walk the loop counterclockwise so you end at the beach with the best light.
