What to Expect

West Beach Loop is Indiana Dunes at its most accessible — a short ramble through backdune woodlands that deposits you onto one of the prettiest stretches of Lake Michigan shoreline in the park. The trail winds through stands of oak and jack pine before cresting a gentle sandy rise (calling it elevation gain is generous) and opening up to a wide, wind-swept beach. The sand underfoot shifts from packed trail to soft dune as you approach the water, so your calves will notice even if your lungs won't. On a clear day, the Chicago skyline floats on the horizon like a mirage, an oddly satisfying contrast to the wild shoreline in front of you. This is a trail for families with small kids, anyone recovering from yesterday's bigger hike, or visitors who just want sand between their toes without committing to a full day.

Safety Advisory

Lake Michigan has dangerous rip currents and sudden drop-offs, especially near the piers. Swimming is at your own risk and conditions change fast — check posted flags before wading in.

Dune grasses and vegetation are fragile and protected. Stay on marked paths through the dune areas — off-trail walking causes erosion that takes decades to recover.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Arrive before 10 AM on summer weekends — the West Beach parking lot fills early and the park closes the entrance once it hits capacity, sometimes by noon on holiday weekends.

Trail Tip

Wear shoes you don't mind getting sandy for the trail portion, then stash them at the beach access point. The dune crossings are loose sand and flip-flops will slow you down more than bare feet.

Trail Tip

Combine this with the Dune Succession Trail that branches off nearby for a longer loop through three distinct ecosystems — it adds maybe 45 minutes and turns a casual stroll into something genuinely educational.
