The Quick Take

Daisy Farm is the Grand Central Station of Isle Royale backcountry — the park's largest campground and the first major stop for hikers heading west from Rock Harbor. Situated along the channel with dock access, it draws a mix of backpackers, paddlers, and boaters, which means you'll have company during peak summer. The trade-off is worth it: sixteen three-sided shelters supplement the tent sites, a seasonal ranger station adds a layer of reassurance, and the trail junction here makes it a natural launchpad for the Mount Ojibway summit. There are no showers, no potable water, and no electricity — this is Isle Royale, after all. But the food lockers keep your provisions safe from curious foxes, and the amphitheater hosts ranger programs that justify the social atmosphere. Best for first-time Isle Royale visitors who want a backcountry experience without committing to the park's more remote and exposed sites.

Pro Tips

Camping Tip

Grab a shelter if you can — they're first-come, first-served and fill fast by early afternoon in July and August. Arriving on a morning ferry from Rock Harbor gives you the best shot, since the hike in is only about seven miles on relatively flat terrain.

Camping Tip

Use Daisy Farm as a base camp for the Mount Ojibway Trail, a steep but short climb that rewards you with one of the best panoramic views on the island. Time it for late afternoon light and you might spot moose feeding in the bogs below.

Camping Tip

Pack a water filter — there's no treated water here, but the lake access is easy and the channel water filters cleanly. Bring extra fuel for your stove too, since campfires aren't allowed anywhere on the island and the nearest camp store is back at Rock Harbor.
