The Quick Take

Duncan Bay is one of Isle Royale's most remote and intimate campgrounds, tucked into the park's northeast corner with just a handful of sheltered sites and a couple of three-sided shelters. There's no ferry dropping you off here -- you're arriving by canoe, kayak, or private boat, which means the crowd filter is built right into the geography. The dock can handle overnight boat stays with reasonable depth in normal conditions, but don't expect anything resembling amenities beyond food lockers to keep the moose and foxes out of your provisions. No potable water, no toilets worth mentioning, no cell service -- just Lake Superior silence and the kind of solitude that most national park campgrounds only promise in their brochures. This is a campground for paddlers and boaters who treat the journey as the destination, and who pack light enough to be self-sufficient for a few nights.

Pro Tips

Camping Tip

With only a few sites and no reservation system, timing matters more than planning. Midweek arrivals in July and August give you the best odds of snagging a spot, but even weekends rarely see full occupancy because so few visitors make it to the northeast end of the island.

Camping Tip

Pack a water filter or purification system -- there's no potable water here, and you'll be sourcing from Lake Superior or inland streams. A gravity filter hung from a tree near the dock works well and saves you from pumping after a long paddle day.

Camping Tip

The waters around Duncan Bay offer solid fishing without needing a license for inland lakes, but remember it's barbless hooks and artificial lures only. If you're casting into Lake Superior itself, you'll need a Michigan fishing license, so sort that out before you leave the mainland.
