Feldtmann Lake Campground
The Quick Take
Feldtmann Lake is one of Isle Royale's quieter backcountry camps, tucked along the southwest shore of its namesake lake where most visitors never bother to trek. With only a handful of individual sites and no potable water, flush toilets, or any modern comforts, this is about as stripped-down as camping gets in the Lower 48. The trade-off is real solitude — while the campgrounds closer to Windigo and Rock Harbor fill up with day-trippers and short-stay hikers, Feldtmann draws the crowd that actually wants to disappear for a few days. The lake itself is a solid inland fishing spot, and the surrounding boreal forest feels genuinely remote even by Isle Royale standards. Choose this campground if you want backcountry quiet without committing to a full island traverse, and you do not mind carrying everything you need on your back.

Pro Tips
The Feldtmann Lake Trail from Windigo is roughly ten miles — plan for a full day with a loaded pack. Most hikers underestimate the time because the trail looks flat on a map, but wet sections and root tangles slow you down considerably.
Feldtmann Lake has decent pike fishing with barbless hooks and artificial lures only. Bring a lightweight telescoping rod and a few spoons — you do not need a Michigan license for inland waters here, which is one of Isle Royale's quieter perks.
There is no potable water at this campground, so bring a reliable filter or chemical treatment. The lake water is cleaner than most mainland sources, but giardia is present on Isle Royale and will ruin your trip faster than a rainy tent.
