Lake Richie Campground
The Quick Take
Lake Richie sits in the quiet interior of Isle Royale, the kind of backcountry camp that rewards effort with genuine solitude. With only a handful of shelters spread along the north shore of its namesake lake, this is one of the more peaceful stops on the island -- particularly compared to the busier harbor-side camps. You will earn it, though: access is foot-only via the Indian Portage Trail or by paddling a series of portages from Moskey Basin, Chippewa Harbor, or Intermediate Lake. There is no potable water, no flush toilets, and certainly no cell service. What you get instead is a pristine inland lake with solid fishing, loon calls at dusk, and the rare luxury of not seeing another group all evening. Choose Lake Richie if you are an experienced backpacker or paddler who values quiet over convenience and does not mind filtering your own water.

Pro Tips
If you are paddling in, the shortest portage is the 0.6-mile carry from Intermediate Lake -- significantly easier than the two-mile haul from Moskey Basin. Plan your route accordingly, especially if your canoe is on the heavier side.
Inland lakes on Isle Royale do not require a fishing license, but you must use barbless hooks and artificial lures only. Lake Richie holds northern pike and yellow perch, and early morning from the shoreline near camp is your best window.
There is no potable water here, so bring a reliable filter or purification system. Lake water is your only source. Also, use the food lockers religiously -- Isle Royale is wolf and fox country, and a curious red fox will absolutely ransack an unattended pack.
