The Quick Take

Siskiwit Bay sits on Isle Royale's quieter southwest shore, the kind of campground you earn through miles of trail or a careful approach by boat. With fewer than ten sheltered sites tucked along the bay, this is backcountry camping distilled to its essentials -- food lockers, a community fire ring, and not much else. The dock is shallow enough that only smaller vessels should attempt it, which keeps the crowds thin even by Isle Royale standards. There's no potable water, no showers, and zero cell service, so you're genuinely off the grid here. The trade-off is a sheltered bay with some of the best inland lake fishing access on the island and a sense of solitude that the busier Rock Harbor corridor can't match. Choose Siskiwit Bay if you're linking the Island Mine and Feldtmann Ridge trails and want a layover camp that feels properly remote.

Booking tip: Isle Royale campgrounds book up fast once the ferry schedule drops in spring, so secure your backcountry permit as early as the reservation window opens -- Siskiwit Bay's small site count means even a handful of parties can fill it.

Pro Tips

Camping Tip

The dock depth runs only a couple of feet under normal conditions, so if you're arriving by private boat, check water levels with the ranger station before committing -- low-water years can make the approach dicey for anything with a real keel.

Camping Tip

This campground sits at the junction of the Island Mine and Feldtmann Ridge trails, making it an ideal base for a two-night loop. Hike out on one trail, return on the other, and you'll see completely different terrain each direction -- old mining sites one way, ridge-top Lake Superior panoramas the other.

Camping Tip

Pack a water filter and extra capacity. There's no potable water here, and the nearest treated source is a full day's hike away. A gravity filter hung at the lakeshore will be your best friend for the three-night maximum stay.
