Tookers Island Campground
The Quick Take
Tookers Island is the kind of campground that makes Isle Royale feel like the wilderness it actually is. Sitting on its own tiny island in Rock Harbor Channel, this two-shelter spot is only reachable by canoe, kayak, or private boat — there is no ferry drop-off, no trail connection, no shortcut. The dock handles about seven feet of depth in normal conditions, which matters if you are paddling in with a loaded canoe in choppy water. With just two shelters and zero amenities — no potable water, no toilets worth mentioning, no nothing — this is as stripped-down as camping gets in the park. The three-night limit during peak season keeps turnover moving, but honestly, crowds are not the issue here. Tookers Island is built for paddlers who want a basecamp right on the water without the foot traffic of nearby Three Mile or Daisy Farm.

Pro Tips
Rock Harbor Channel can kick up surprising waves on windy days — plan your paddle for early morning when conditions are typically calmest, and check weather before committing to the crossing.
Bring a water filter rated for lake water and fill up directly from Lake Superior around the island. There is no potable water source here, and carrying enough for a multi-day stay in a canoe is impractical.
Pack a fishing rod with barbless hooks and artificial lures — the inland waters around Rock Harbor Channel do not require a license, and the solitude of fishing from Tookers Island dock at dusk is one of Isle Royale's quieter pleasures.
