What to Expect

Getting to Cushman Ridge is half the adventure — you're on an island in the middle of Lake Superior that requires a ferry or seaplane just to reach the trailhead. Once you're moving, the trail climbs steadily through dense boreal forest, thick with birch, spruce, and fir that block most of the wind and sun. The ridge sections open up to long views across the island's interior, where you might spot moose browsing in boggy clearings below. With nearly 1,500 feet of elevation change spread across the round trip, the climb is relentless rather than dramatic — no single killer pitch, just a steady grind that accumulates in your legs. The trail surface alternates between packed dirt, root-laced stretches, and rocky scrambles near the ridge crest. This is a trail for hikers who want Isle Royale's wild solitude without committing to a multi-day backpacking trip — just you, the wolves you won't see, and the moose you probably will.

Safety Advisory

Isle Royale has no cell service anywhere on the island. If you twist an ankle on this trail, rescue requires other hikers or a ranger patrol to relay the message — carry a PLB or satellite communicator.

Moose encounters are common and potentially dangerous, especially cows with calves in spring and bulls in fall rut. Give them at least 50 yards and never position yourself between a cow and her calf.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start early to catch the ferry schedule and maximize daylight — Isle Royale sits far enough north that summer days are long but fall days get short fast, and there's no driving to the trailhead after dark.

Trail Tip

Pack a full water filtration setup rather than relying on carrying everything in. Lake Superior water along the shore is accessible and cold, but inland sources need treatment for giardia.

Trail Tip

The ridge overlooks face southwest, making late afternoon light ideal for photography — the boreal canopy below turns gold in September and the contrast against Lake Superior's steel-blue water is worth the sore quads.
