Feldtmann Loop Section 1: Hike from Windigo to Feldtmann Lake
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
Isle Royale is true wilderness with no roads, no cell service, and no quick rescue — injuries on this trail mean a long evacuation by boat or floatplane, so hike conservatively and carry a first aid kit.
Moose are common along this corridor and can be aggressive, especially cows with calves in spring and early summer — give them at least fifty yards and never position yourself between a cow and her calf.
Overgrown vegetation and uneven root-covered trail surface make ankle injuries the most common backcountry problem on the island — sturdy boots with ankle support are not optional here.

Pro Tips
You can only reach Windigo by seaplane or ferry from Houghton, MI — book your Isle Royale Queen IV or seaplane reservation well in advance, as summer slots fill months out.
There is no reliable water source for long stretches of this section, so carry a full load from Windigo and pack a filter for topping off at streams or the lake itself — treat everything, giardia is endemic on the island.
The Feldtmann Lake campground sits on the west shore with a stunning view of the Feldtmann Ridge across the water — grab a site early in the day if you're arriving in peak July-August season, as there are limited spots and no reservation system for backcountry sites.
