What to Expect

This is the wild heart of the Feldtmann Loop — a full day of backcountry travel through some of Isle Royale's most remote terrain. You'll climb steeply from the Feldtmann Lake campground up to the spine of Feldtmann Ridge, where the boreal forest opens up to sweeping views of the lake below and the rugged western shoreline of the island. The ridge walk is the reward, with Lake Superior stretching to the horizon on clear days. But the trail earns its reputation: expect overgrown vegetation brushing your legs, ankle-twisting roots, and rocky footing that demands constant attention. The descent toward Siskiwit Bay brings you through dense forest before depositing you at one of the island's most beautifully desolate shorelines. This section is for backpackers who came to Isle Royale specifically to feel like the last person on earth.

Safety Advisory

Overgrown vegetation and uneven footing with roots and rocks make ankle injuries a real risk — gaiters and trekking poles are near-essential, not optional luxury items.

This section is fully exposed on the ridge with zero cell service and no bail-out points. If weather turns, you're committed. Check the marine forecast before leaving camp, because Lake Superior weather can shift from sunshine to sideways rain in under an hour.

Moose are common along this corridor, especially near Feldtmann Lake and the Siskiwit Bay lowlands. Give them extreme distance — a moose with a calf is more dangerous than any bear you'll never see on this island.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Time your ridge walk for midday when fog has burned off Lake Superior — morning clouds frequently obscure the western views that make this section worth the effort.

Trail Tip

Carry a full day's water from Feldtmann Lake camp. There are no reliable water sources along the ridge, and the streams marked on older maps can run dry by late July.

Trail Tip

The viewpoint where the trail first crests Feldtmann Ridge — roughly two miles from Feldtmann Lake camp — is the single best photography spot on the entire loop. Face south for the lake-and-forest composition that defines Isle Royale's backcountry character.
