What to Expect

This is the homestretch of the Feldtmann Loop, and it earns every step. You'll pick up an old mining road — a relic from Isle Royale's copper boom days — that cuts along the western spine of the Greenstone Ridge before dropping you down into Windigo. The footing is honest backcountry: roots and rocks that demand your attention, especially on tired legs if you've been out for days. The ridge walking serves up sprawling views of Lake Superior's northern shore and the dense boreal forest below, with occasional glimpses of Canada on clear days. As you descend toward Windigo, the trail softens through mixed hardwood forest that lights up in September. The final stretch into the Windigo harbor feels earned in a way that few trail endings do. This one belongs to backpackers finishing a multi-day loop who want that satisfying full-circle moment.

Safety Advisory

Isle Royale has no potable water infrastructure on trail — treat or filter all water from inland lakes and streams, as beaver activity makes giardia a real concern throughout the island.

Moose encounters are common on this section, particularly near wetlands in the descent to Windigo. Give them wide berth — a cow with calves is more dangerous than any wolf on the island.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

If you're finishing the full Feldtmann Loop, time your arrival at Windigo to align with the seaplane or ferry schedule — there's no road out, and missing your ride means an unplanned night.

Trail Tip

The stretch along the old mining road is more exposed than the forested sections, so layer up even in summer — Lake Superior generates its own wind chill that can drop perceived temps by fifteen degrees.

Trail Tip

Stop at the high point on the ridge before the descent into Windigo for the best photography of the trip — you can see Washington Harbor, Beaver Island, and on exceptional days, the Ontario shoreline all in one panorama.
