What to Expect

This is deep wilderness hiking at its most contemplative. Section 6 of the Greenstone Ridge Trail drops you into a corridor of hardwood forest where the canopy closes overhead and the outside world genuinely disappears. The trail surface is honest about its intentions — roots snake across the path, rocks jut up where you least expect them, and overgrown vegetation brushes your legs and pack on both sides. The rolling terrain means you're never climbing hard, but you're never coasting either. Navigation demands real attention here; trail markers can be sparse and the overgrowth occasionally swallows the path. At roughly three and a half miles, it's a short segment by Greenstone standards, but the isolation makes it feel longer. This stretch rewards the hiker who came to Isle Royale specifically to get away from everything — including other hikers.

Safety Advisory

Trail conditions change significantly between early and late season — what was a clear path in July can be nearly swallowed by vegetation by September, making navigation skills essential rather than optional.

Isle Royale has no emergency vehicle access. An injury on this remote section means a long carry-out or a wait for float plane evacuation, so hike with a partner and carry a PLB or satellite communicator.

Moose frequent these hardwood corridors, especially near water sources at dawn and dusk. Give them at least 50 yards and never position yourself between a cow and calf.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Carry a physical map and compass as your primary navigation tools — GPS signal is unreliable on Isle Royale, and this section's overgrowth can obscure trail blazes for stretches at a time.

Trail Tip

Pair this section with an overnight at South Desor campground to break up the Greenstone Ridge traverse; trying to rush through as a day segment leaves no margin for route-finding slowdowns.

Trail Tip

Wear long pants and gaiters regardless of temperature — the overgrown vegetation along the trail hides shin-level obstacles and the brush harbors ticks throughout the summer months.
