What to Expect

This stretch of the Rock Harbor Trail is Isle Royale at its most raw — a rugged shoreline scramble that threads between dense boreal forest and the cold, open waters of Rock Harbor Channel. You'll pick your way over slick rock shelves and gnarled root networks while the trail rises and dips with maddening frequency, never letting you settle into a rhythm. The payoff comes in layers: first the historic Rock Harbor Lighthouse appears through the trees, then the weathered structures of Edisen Fishery tell the story of the island's commercial fishing past. Overgrown vegetation crowds the trail in summer, so you'll feel the wilderness pressing in. By the time you reach the Daisy Farm campground, tucked along the harbor shore, you've earned every blister. This one is for backpackers who want their miles to feel like real miles, not a sidewalk stroll.

Safety Advisory

The rocky surfaces along this section stay slippery even in dry conditions and become genuinely hazardous after rain — ankle injuries are the most common evacuation reason on Isle Royale, and getting rescued from this island is a serious logistical ordeal.

Moose frequent this corridor, especially near Daisy Farm. Give them at least 50 feet of space and never position yourself between a cow and calf — a moose charge in dense forest with no escape route is no joke.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start early from Three Mile Camp — the rocky sections are significantly less treacherous when morning dew has dried but before afternoon rain makes them slick again.

Trail Tip

Trekking poles are not optional here. The constant ups and downs over wet rock and root tangles will punish your knees and ankles without them, especially if you're carrying a loaded pack.

Trail Tip

Linger at Edisen Fishery and the Rock Harbor Lighthouse — these are among the best-preserved historic sites on the island and most through-hikers blow past them. The fishery buildings are open to explore and the lighthouse offers some of the best photography angles on Rock Harbor Channel.
