What to Expect

Starting from the Windigo visitor area on Isle Royale's remote west end, the Huginnin Loop drops you into one of the most isolated day hikes in the Lower 48. The trail threads through boreal forest thick with spruce and birch before spitting you out onto the rocky northern shoreline of Lake Superior, where the views across open water feel almost oceanic. You'll pass old mining ruins from the island's copper-boom days — crumbling foundations half-swallowed by moss that most hikers walk right past. The terrain is honest trail, not manicured path: expect roots, rocks, and boardwalks that turn slick after rain. At just over eight miles, it's a full day but never punishing. This is a trail for hikers who want wilderness without the suffer-fest — and who don't mind that getting to the trailhead requires a seaplane or a six-hour ferry ride.

Safety Advisory

Isle Royale has no cell service anywhere on the island. Carry a physical map and compass — trail junctions can be subtle and GPS apps are unreliable without downloaded offline maps.

Moose are common along this route and can be aggressive, especially cows with calves in spring and early summer. Give them at least 50 yards and never position yourself between a cow and her calf.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Time your hike to catch the Ranger III or seaplane schedule — you can knock out the full loop on your arrival day if you land at Windigo before noon, giving you the afternoon light on the north shore.

Trail Tip

The boardwalk sections through boggy lowlands get genuinely treacherous when wet. Trekking poles earn their weight here, especially on the descent back toward Windigo where the boards tilt slightly downhill.

Trail Tip

The old Huginnin Cove mining ruins sit just off-trail near the northern shoreline — pause here for lunch and poke around the historical remnants. The cove itself, with its cobblestone beach and Superior backdrop, is the most photogenic spot on the entire loop.
