What to Expect

This is Isle Royale at its most rewarding-per-mile. From Rock Harbor, you'll wind through dense boreal forest on a narrow track that fights back — expect roots grabbing at your ankles and vegetation brushing your shoulders on both sides. The trail is rugged enough to demand your attention but short enough that even moderate hikers can manage it without drama. About halfway through, the canopy thins and you start catching glimpses of Lake Superior through the trees. The payoff at Mount Franklin's overlook is a wide-open panorama of the northern shoreline and the vast, cold expanse of Superior stretching toward Canada. On a clear day, you can see the Ontario coast. This is the kind of trail that rewards hikers who don't mind a little bushwhacking for a view that feels entirely earned and rarely crowded.

Safety Advisory

Trail conditions change significantly through the season — roots and rocks are slippery when wet, and overgrown sections can obscure the path entirely by late summer. Losing the trail here means navigating dense boreal forest with no landmarks.

Isle Royale is genuine wilderness with no emergency services nearby. Moose encounters are common and the animals are unpredictable — give them at least 50 feet and never position yourself between a cow and calf.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Navigation matters here more than distance — the trail can be faint in spots with overgrown vegetation, so bring a physical map and compass rather than relying on your phone. Cell service is nonexistent on Isle Royale.

Trail Tip

Time your hike for late morning when the sun illuminates the northern views from the overlook. An early start also means you'll beat the afternoon fog that rolls in off Superior and can completely erase the panorama you came for.

Trail Tip

The spur trail to Three Mile Campground makes this a natural add-on if you're already doing the Rock Harbor to Daisy Farm corridor — tag the summit on your way through rather than making it a standalone out-and-back.
